There are things that go bump in the night. Suddenly, you find your imagination take hold of you. Is that a mouse scratching on the walls or something far more sinister hiding in the shadows?

Come join us, as we take a look at some of the most haunted locations in the world. Is it a ghost or just old man Jenkins trying to frighten potential buyers away?

I'm glad you guys like the topic. I decided not to bring back the Death of the Day thread this year. It sounded like a good idea until about the third week when I was really having to dig to get ideas for it, lol. This should be easier and more interesting to do.

For today's Haunted House let's find the way to San Jose and visit a house that, once in side, you may literally never find your way out!

Image

Sarah Lockwood Winchester—the wife of gun magnate William Wirt Winchester, whose family created the Winchester rifle that was heralded as "the gun that won the west”—designed and oversaw the construction of the sprawling Queen Anne-style Victorian mansion that bears her name. Construction on the 24,000-square-foot home, which is located at 525 South Winchester Boulevard in San Jose, California, began in 1886.

Image

Overcome with grief in the wake of her husband's death from tuberculosis in 1881, folklore states that Sarah sought out a spiritualist who could commune with the dead. Through the medium, William told his widow that their tragedies were a result of the blood money the family had made off of the Winchester rifles. He warned that vengeful ghosts would seek her out. In order to protect herself, William said that Sarah must "build a home for the spirits who have fallen from this terrible weapon." There was just one catch: construction on the house could never stop. "If you continue building, you will live,” the medium warned Sarah. “Stop and you will die."

Tell 'em Bill...

When I was a kid we had a fun boardgame called Mystery Mansion.

Image

But in 1984 I had no idea that a real house of horrors such as this actually existed. But there are no treasures inside the walls of this MC Escher nightmare come to life for here you'll only find sorrow and madness.

Image

So beware, for the first step you take into this labyrinth, may just take you one step closer to your doom!

For decades, workers at today's Haunted House of the Day led sailors into safe harbor, and some say, they're still there today.

Image

Hezekiah H. Pittee was assigned the task, and he oversaw most of the construction efforts. He had really restless children, and they often accompanied him to the job site. On July 10th, 1873, the kids were playing on a work cart when it toppled over, crashing into the coast. The two eldest Pittee children, Eliza and Mary, drowned.

According to the staff of the lighthouse today, the playful spirits of these children still inhabit the lighthouse. Workers will often discover locked doors suddenly open, they report disembodied laughter in the middle of the night, and music boxes sold in the gift shop tend to pop open and play on their own. Tour guides also report increased incidences of being touched while showing visitors around.

A terrifying specter called ‘The Man in Blue’ appears to workers, making their shift a living hell. One worker even refused to return after he was harassed the entire night by the man in blue. He chased him up and down the 219 stairs of the lighthouse. Many people believe that the man in blue is the spirit of the old lighthouse keeper, Joseph Andreau. He plummeted to his death at the lighthouse while painting the original tower in 1859.

Others state that this is the spirit of another keeper, a man so broken by the solitude of the job that he hanged himself inside of the tower. Visitors and staff describe the overwhelming scent of cigars on the landing of the tower. At night, strange footsteps are heard when the lighthouse is otherwise empty.

Be sure to keep the lights on!

There aren't many ghost hunting shows left these days. Only a couple I can think of, sadly.

Todays Haunted House of the Day takes us to down into the bayou Luisiana where spirits of the antebellum age may still roam...

Image

The Myrtles Plantation is a historic home and former antebellum plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana, United States built in 1796 by General David Bradford. In the early history of the property, it was worked by enslaved people. It is reportedly a haunted place, and has been featured in television. The Myrtles Plantation has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978.

Image

It is currently a bed and breakfast, and offers historical and mystery tours. According to legend, after being shot William Winter staggered inside the house and died on the 17th step of the stairs. The plantation house is rumored to be on top of an ancient Tunica Indian burial ground.
