MOTU 1987 Movie The Official ULTIMATE Thread - TONS of pics!

Featuring some of the most creative looking action figures, ever, He-man and the Masters of the Universe and She-Ra Princess of Power has garnered a huge following since it's creation in the early '80s.

The Unbelievable Scenes!

The Death of Saurod: This is one scene that still has Me baffled. In the animated series killing was a no no, sure there was hints about it from time to time but it never happen (even the classic Problem with Power episode nobody died) and even Skeletor, the evil one never killed any of his minions no matter how many times they failed him. Yet this version of Skeletor took it out very hard and used his force to literally wipe out Saurod. One of the coolest new bounty hunting warriors was killed off. Since it was a movie and this was a darker time and Skeletor was much more sinister they felt it could happen and it did.

Skeletor's Earth Invasion: Like an alien race, the Lord of Destruction invaded the planet Earth to get what was rightfully his, the Cosmic Key! This was a key scene within the movie but the greatness is highly overlooked arguably due to the overall nature of the film.

Miscellaneous but great Stuff!

The Movie Score composed by Bill Conti: One of the most important aspect of the ENTIRE film is the musical score composed by Bill Conti (Rocky, The Right Stuff). Performed by the Graunke Orchestra of Munich, this is arguably the greatest score that Conti has written and undoubtedly one of the great movie score in history! It's bombastic and heroic sound truly makes the movie more exciting. He-man's theme as well as Skeletor's is very memorable and the score set a NEW standard for years to come! A special re-release of Bill's complete score was issued by La-La Land Records and has been sold out for years. As a movie score lover and collector, I can truly say that I have adored this score since the film came out and since loved it. If you do not own it this is such a treat to have. Being movie score fan is great but owning something this great is an honor!

The original Mattel vintage Movie Action figures: Back when the film was released during the last day of the MOTU vintage line, they made and released ONLY three character they had rights too which was Saurod, Blade, and Gwildor. These were fantastic figures and really still are. As of now in the MOTUC line there are NO movie figure present nor has Mattel acquired any rights to make the other characters and other versions seen in the live action feature. FANS, get on the horn, get Mattel's attention that you just don't want Saurod, Blade, and Gwildor but ALSO the other ALL NEW characters like Pig Boy, the humans such as Det. Lubic and THE other versions of He-Man & Skeletor and others like the concept version of Saurod & She-Ra! You have the Power!

The Bleak Future of the MOTU in Cinema!

Masters of the Universe 2! Sadly, a sequel never came to be. Cannon was going to make a MOTU sequel as well as a "live action" Spider-Man movie which both were to be directed by Albert Pyun at the same time but due to a severe money loss they had to can the projects thus cancelling their deals with Mattel & Marvel and had to re-do things about and then came Cyborg in 1989!

I hope one day there will indeed be another MOTU film in the near future, one that will pay more attention to the classic material and be true to what the fans love, we can only hope!

Well, after "that" sword was seen @ SDCC 13, Blade was revealed at Power-Con and I am so happy with him and I can't wait to get him!

I just hope Saurod and even Gwildor (yes Gwildor so I can complete the Vintage trio) is coming soon. I'd really love for them to get the movie rights too, that would be a dream come true!

Amazing thread - what an education. Your love and devotion make the material a treat. Great collection of photos - the only thing missing, I think, are pictures of the actual vintage trio of movie figures!

I have never seen the movie; as I've related elsewhere, I got the first DVD sets of He-Man and She-Ra, but haven't watched either. I don't think I've seen more than a handful of episodes, ever - but I've started collecting the toys with a vengeance. I really like the pulp-inspired combination of sword/sorcery and futuristic fantasy. I feel that the line is very much inspired by the Robert E. Howard (Conan & Kull) and Edgar Rice Burroughs (John Carter & Tarzan) that I love. Right now, my kids and I invent our own mythos based on those inspirations (pulp inspiration from me, brilliant non-sequiturs from my kids).

I fear the movie, however, would be steeped in the campy self-indulgence and awkward attempts at pop-culture "cool" that afflicted so many 80's movies (unless they were directed by John Carpenter, in which case it always worked).

Thanks Loolar! Actually, I did that on purpose, noticed I only put the concept of the figures there and the actual figures.

Well, the entire series of cartoons are great!
