Swamp Thing by Alan Moore Book One

We're starting with a classic. Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing Book One! I've personally already read all six books from this wonderful collection but I've decided to reread it for fun! I welcome those inclined to join!! These stories never get old for me and I can't wait to dig in again. Personally, I'm going to do a summary of my thoughts after each story. You can do this, too, or just dive in and give your thoughts on the entire book if you prefer.

Alan Moore turned the Swamp Thing upside down in the Anatomy Lesson story. He took a C list character and made him a staple of DC's occult. His work opened the door for Niel Gaiman, Grant Morrison and other Brits to cross the pond and produce some of the best stories out there. I might just tag along this thread and start reviewing Grant's run on Animal Man.

Just finished 'Anatomy Lesson'. Wow.

First of all, this has amazing dialogue. The first story, Swamp Thing talking about the 'shadows'.. mesmerized me.

The second story is just epic. I love when they sort of exclude the main character, but not entirely. Jason Woodrue, amazing character. His little 'revenge' at the end of Anatomy Lesson gave me chills.

I liked that in the first issue, they gave you a flashback of previous events and reestablished the main and supporting characters through the eyes of Alan Moore and Swamp Thing.

The second issue was really enjoyable, too. Jason Woodrue is a really neat character. He executes his plan perfectly. How awesomely trippy was it when they revealed the truth about Alec Holland? Loved the classic horror pacing of the latter bit of the story, too, when Swamp Thing starts getting closer and closer to his captor.

What do you think of the art, by the way? I think the rough sketchy unpolished look really works for this comic. If the pencils were tighter, I don't think it would have been as effective in setting the right mood for this book.

The art is perfect. It made it feel a little more horror, and pulpy. I ended up reading it all the way through and ordering volume 2!

I was skeptical when the JLA appeared, but they were used really well! Discussing what to do while Swamp Thing was saving the day, was perfect and funny.

The Matt Cable storyline is getting really interesting.

Oh man, we're rereading Moore's Swamp Thing? Count me in. I'm actually reading Miyazaki's Nausicaa right now, Swamp Thing would be an interesting companion from an environmental fantasy standpoint.
