Finally saw it this week. It was cowardice. But I liked the usual stuff (ie, the cast).
Here's my deal. I'm a huge mark for Rey, because her core trait is compassion. Compassion to an absolute fault, where she will endanger herself to help someone, where her whole story began because as a barely-scraping-by scavenger she chose to take care of a droid over herself. No one cares about droids! Even Luke was sarcastic to droids! Being a Superman guy I dig heroes like that. And that was still intact here, but my thing is this: if you wanted to write a character who came from absolutely nowhere but has a once-in-a-generation connection to a mystical force that binds all living things, Rey is exactly the character you would come up with. Her being a Palpatine is the dumbest, most fan-fictiony thing. Also her being like "Rey...Skywalker?" when a wild OLD LADY appears. (Which I assume led to a Pokemon battle?) Just be Rey. You don't need to be anything else.
I don't know, I also wasn't terribly thrilled that Kylo Ren did a face turn when he unambiguously chose not to in the last movie, but this whole movie is basically one toddler stealing his toy back from another, so what are you gonna do? Driver's great no matter what, at least. I gotta see Marriage Story. He uses a lightsaber in that, right?
