Expanding Foam?

Anyone out there use the expanding foam in a can before? I'm looking for something else to use for my unfinished Batcave, that currently has painted, paper mâché rock walls.

Since I had to dismantle it when we moved, I may as well put it back together with some new props and new rock too!

My next question is this: once sprayed and expanded/hardened, can the foam be "carved" to look more like rock instead of a gelatinized mess?

Please let me know when you can...if you'd like to see pics of my cave before it was dismantled, go over to my gallery page.

Stay Minty-Fresh!

Hi Savant,

As far as I know, the expanding foam that I've used for other projects cuts like most foam although it is a bit softer but if you're using a hot wire, you won't have any problems.

Do you ever sleep Acid?!?!? haha...thanks for the quick reply!

Never used a hot wire before, how would an exacto-knife do?

Where can I get a hot wire from?

Does the expanding foam work well with paint applied?

Mark of the beast. No rest for the wicked. X-Acto knife is okay but honestly hot wire is the best way to go. You can get it at most hobby stores because they're used to cut the foam for mountain scapes and other craggy surfaces for railways and table top miniature games. Expanding foam should paint fine once it's fully cured.

The only place I ever used it was to fill in some gaps in the shed right after we moved in. I do remember cuting with a large exacto (rough cut, like stale bread) and painting. Ten years and still holding up well!

If you're handy, you can make something like this:

Look at the crazy cuts he got out of his homemade $20 foam "scroll saw". You can buy a fairly cheap hand held one, cut out the general shapes you want and then rough it up for a nice texture. Look at some of the crazy stuff those Warhammer players made out of foam:
